It Asked at 7:40. The Shoes Didn't Count.
The pair was still on the mat. I had already seen them. Then the phone asked if I walked.
Tuesday, 7:38pm. Dishes in the sink. Kids arguing about whose turn it is with the iPad. I walk past the front door to get a glass and there they are — the walking shoes, back on the mat. Monday night they had gone in the closet after the sidewalk. I set them out again when the bags landed, because the article said the cue has to be waiting. I look at them. I know they are there. That is the whole interaction. In my head the plan is still on, because the cue is back in the path. I fill the glass. I do not put them on.
7:40. The phone buzzes from the contact I saved. Not a badge. Not "time to crush it." One line about tonight's walk. I am standing ten feet from the shoes. I have already completed the noticing. The text is asking a different question.
That is the feature. Not a smarter mat. Not a photo of sneakers you can finish on the way to the car. An outbound at the hour you named that treats the arrangement as a cue and the walk as a walk. A habit cue isn't a check-in. The cue sits. The check-in asks. I had the sitting. I did not have the ask until the number sent it.
Why a habit cue isn't a check-in
Search that phrase and you get environment design. Make it obvious. Put the shoes where you will trip. The product is a placement you can complete without leaving the house. Seeing the pair is the interaction. The walk is optional after that, because the cue already paid you.
The usual tools all let the cue close the night:
- The shoes. They were on the mat at 7:38. I looked. Looking is what a cue is for. They cannot ask if I am going. They cannot tell Monday's twenty from Tuesday's stare. They stay crooked either way.
- The calendar ping. "Walk." You swipe it in the kitchen. Swiping is handling it. The shoes are still there, so the swipe feels honest. Nothing in the ping knows the pair is a placement you already finished at 9:46 on Sunday.
- ChatGPT / any chat you open. Tell it the shoes are out and it will congratulate the if-then. It will not text 7:40 from Contacts while you are holding a glass. You would have to open a tab to admit you only looked.
- A friend who got the photo. They already said "nice system." They are not in your kitchen at 7:40. The photo was Sunday. Tuesday is a different night, and the friend is not going to ask whether the shoes made it onto your feet.
I built Aiery because I kept cashing the cue. The intelligence was never the gap. I can notice shoes. The gap is a question at 7:40 that will not take "they're still there" as the walk. The cue's job is to be visible. The check-in's job is to need an answer.
What 7:40 actually sounded like
Monday I had walked. Twenty from the sidewalk. I had told it not to make the photo the habit. It said it would ask Tuesday at 7:40 whether I went. Tuesday I had the shoes. I had the look. I did not have the walk yet. The number still had tonight.
Aiery (Tue 7:40, SMS): "Walk tonight — 20 after dinner. Monday was 20 from the sidewalk. Going, 15, or skip?"
Me: "The shoes are still by the door. I just looked at them."
Aiery: "Looking isn't the walk. Are they on your feet?"
Me: "No. They're the reminder. That's the system. I don't need a second one."
Aiery: "The reminder already happened. The shoes didn't count. One word — going, 15, or skip?"
Me: "I thought the cue was the check-in."
Aiery: "A habit cue isn't a check-in. The cue sits. I ask. Going?"
Me: "Going. Don't count the pair."
Aiery: "I won't. Tell me from the sidewalk."
Me (sidewalk): "18. They were by the door the whole time. They're on now."
Aiery: "18 logged. Placement wasn't the entry. Tomorrow 7:40, same question. The shoes can stay. They still won't count."
I walked. Eighteen minutes. I told it from the sidewalk. I had put the shoes back in the path before dinner. The path did not log 18. The thread did, because 7:40 asked a question the mat cannot ask. ChatGPT would have praised the environment. The calendar would have taken the swipe. The pair would have sat there until ten and still looked like a plan. A habit cue isn't a check-in is not a slogan if you say it in a caption under sneakers. It is a slogan if 7:40 refuses to let the sneakers be the answer.
Call or text free. Tell it the shoes are already by the door. See if 7:40 counts the pair — or asks if you walked.

Aiery is a phone number. You save it like a person. You name the hour. Then the outbound lives in Messages — not on a mat whose success metric is that you noticed it. There is no app to open so the cue can get credit. There is tonight, in one word. Going. Fifteen. Skip. Eighteen from the sidewalk. Each of those is the walk. "The shoes are still there" is not.
The mechanism is memory plus a text that goes out at the hour you named, not a visual you can finish by looking. It remembered after dinner, twenty, weeknights, Sundays off. It remembered Monday was 20 from the sidewalk. It remembered the shoes were a placement. Tuesday's 7:40 did not ask if the pair had survived the stroller. It asked if I went. If I had stayed quiet after "they're still there," it could text once more, or call, from the same contact. The lock screen would say the name I saved — not a badge from an app that used "don't forget your shoes" as the conversion.
This is not medical advice, and it is not a claim that cues are useless. If shoes by the door get you out, keep them there. A cue you use is fine. The break is using the cue as the accountability. A shoe cannot ask if you are going tonight. A thread can, because the plan was already in it, including the part where you tried to spend the look as the night.
The part I did not trust was the minute after I saw them. I had already done the noticing. The text treated the noticing as done and the walk as still open. The file is the thread. You do not finish a walk by confirming the shoes are still in the doorway.
Cue vs a number that asks at the hour
- The shoes: Visible. Silent. You can look and keep the credit. 7:40 is just another time they sit there.
- Calendar / app ping: "Walk." Swipe equals handled. Does not know the pair is already the thing you finished. Mute it and Tuesday never existed.
- Chat you open: Will write the if-then and praise the mat. Will not text 7:40 from Contacts. You are still the person who has to reopen a tab to admit you only looked.
- Aiery: The shoes can stay. They are not the answer. 7:40 asks. Placement is one line. The walk is a different line. Founding is $19/mo if you want the hour to be a question — not a habit cue you can complete with your eyes.
I am not more honest on the sidewalk than I was at 7:38 with the glass. I still would have let the look count. The thread would not. It asked at 7:40. The shoes didn't count. That is the only reason Tuesday has a number instead of a pair on a mat.
