I Don't Need Another Place to Track This
Four logs. Zero walk. Another habit tracker is another empty grid — not the night.
Thursday, 8:11pm. Apple Health has Tuesday. Notes has a list titled actual from January — twenty boxes, four ticked. There's a sheet I made with my sister in March; last cell March 19. MyFitnessPal still thinks I eat breakfast. Sunday I downloaded another habit tracker because the others felt stale. I am in the onboarding. I am picking a color for a streak I have not started. I have four places to put the walk. I have not walked. Finishing the fifth setup feels like doing the habit.
This is how you end up shopping for another habit tracker when you already have four. The new grid is a finished task. The walk is an unfinished one. Your brain prefers the grid. A clean log is a costume for tonight. Tonight still needs shoes.
Why another habit tracker feels like progress
Search that phrase and you get roundups of the seven best apps this month, each promising a simpler log than the one you already ignored. Fine. Simpler is not what Thursday is missing. Thursday is missing a channel that will not let "I should set up a place for this" count as the walk.
The usual fixes all sell another system of record:
- ChatGPT / any chat you open. Tell it you fell off tracking and it writes a spreadsheet. You feel current. You still have to paste into it tomorrow. It will not text 7:40 from a number in Contacts. You asked whether to walk. You got columns.
- The new habit app. Onboarding is the product. An empty grid looks like a beginning. Your existing Health data is an import they will botch, then a reason to start over so the boxes look honest.
- Notes, the sheet, the paper calendar. Useful if you actually tick Thursday. Mostly a museum. The moment they feel messy you declare them "not the real system" and open a cleaner one.
- A friend who also tracks. You trade screenshots of empty weeks. Neither of you texts Thursday. Sharing the log is the social version of picking a streak color.
I built Aiery because I kept confusing a new log with a new night. The intelligence was never the bottleneck. I could have told you the walk from Health. I could have told you from January's boxes. The bottleneck is a channel that will still have tonight when you are hiding inside setup.
I told it not to become the log
I had already named the hour: after dinner, weeknights, twenty minutes. Tuesday I walked. Wednesday I skipped. Thursday I opened the new tracker instead of the door. I texted the contact I saved, because I wanted permission to migrate the history before I stood up.
Me (Thu 8:14, SMS): "Don't send a tracker. I already have Health, Notes, a sheet. I don't need another place to log the walk."
Aiery: "Good. I won't. After-dinner walk, twenty, weeknights. Health can keep the minutes. Going tonight, later, or skip?"
Me: "I should set up a place for us. The sheet is a mess. Sunday I started a new app."
Aiery: "Don't finish the onboarding. Tuesday is already in Health. Tonight is still after dinner. One word."
Me: "Skip. I was picking a color for the streak."
Aiery: "Skip logged here. No new tracker. Color is not the walk. I'll ask tomorrow 7:40."
Aiery (Fri 7:40): "Walk tonight — 20 after dinner. Thursday was a skip. Going, 15, or skip?"
Me: "That's it? You're not going to want a dashboard?"
Aiery: "That's it. No grid. Health already exists. Tonight is the question."
Me: "Walking. Don't make a log."
Aiery: "I won't. Tell me from the sidewalk. Apple Health can keep the minutes. I'll keep the night."
I walked. Nineteen minutes. I told it from the sidewalk. It logged nineteen in the same thread that still had Thursday's skip and Tuesday in Health. That is the whole difference. ChatGPT would have taken "where should we track this" as a prompt for a template. The app would have wanted week one in its grid before the night counted. The number still had Friday. Another habit tracker is not what was missing. A place that asks if you did it — without becoming the fifth log — was.
Call or text free. Tell it you already track this. See if it sends a dashboard — or asks about tonight.

Aiery is a phone number. You save it. You can say Apple Health is the log, or that there is no log, just the thread. Then the outbound lives in Messages — not in an empty grid that needs a week of data to feel real. There is no "log it in our app." There is tonight, in one word.
The mechanism is memory plus outbound SMS, not a tracker that owes you a nicer home screen. It remembered Health was already the minutes. It remembered no new grid. Thursday's skip did not become a reason to start a dashboard so the boxes would look honest. If I had gone quiet, it could text once more, or call, from the same contact. The lock screen would still say the name I saved — not a badge from an app that used "where do we track this" as a conversion event.
This is not medical advice and it is not a claim that you should throw away Health or Strava. If you love a Saturday long-run file, keep it. The product that demands to be the system of record is protecting its category. The product that asks if you walked is protecting the night you already named. A messy sheet you actually walk on Friday is still a walk. A beautiful empty tracker you hide in on Thursday is still a Thursday on the couch.
Another tracker vs a number that already has tonight
- Chat you open: Will write a tracking template the second you mention the messy sheet. Will not text 7:40 from Contacts. You are still the reminder system, and now you have five logs.
- Habit app: Onboarding is the win. Your existing Health data is not their week one. Import already failed last time. Empty boxes are the product.
- Notes / sheet / paper: Fine until you decide they are not official. Then you start another place instead of standing up.
- Aiery: You already have a place, or you don't. Either way, tonight is the question. Skip is a line in the thread, not a prompt for a dashboard. Founding is $19/mo if you want Friday to still be the walk — not another habit tracker to set up when the sheet feels stale.
I am not more disciplined on Friday than I was in the onboarding. I skipped Thursday. I still walked Friday. The problem was never missing a log. I had four. The problem was a fifth one that felt like progress. I don't need another place to track this. I need a number that will still have tonight when I am picking a color.
Try it: Call or text +1 844 460 6796 and tell it you already track this. See if you get a dashboard, or a question about tonight.
Or claim a Founding 100 spot at $19/mo if you want the night to count in a thread — not in another empty grid.
